Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that the school was not suitable for her. Ford later applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her classmates. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she was already making her debut on television in an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
