Audra Mcdonald stands out in the range of her talents and versatility in her roles as a performer and singer. Audra McDonald who has won Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was named as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour to recognize achievements in the field. In addition to her work in the theatre, she has a thriving career as a concert and recording performer who regularly appears at most prestigious venues in the world. McDonald was born in Fresno California to a music family, completed her classical voice training at the New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, a year after her Juilliard School, McDonald won the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in the Musical" for Carousel. Over the next four years she received two additional Tony Awards in the featured actress category, for her roles on The Broadway premieres of Terrence McNally's production Master Class (1996) and the show Ragtime (1998) giving her an unprecedented total of three Tony Awards before the age of 30. In 2004, she was nominated for her fourth Tony Award for her performance in A Raisin in the Sun alongside Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her fifth Tony and first for the category of Leading Actress was awarded to her for her portrayal as the main character of The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The Tony Awards most-decorated performer in 2014 was Billie Holiday, who she played on stage in Lady Day At Emerson's Bar & Grill. It's the same role she played for her 2017 West End London debut for in which she's been named for the Olivier Award. As well as making history with the most performances that an actor has won in a competition she also became the first to win awards across all four categories. Her other credits for theater are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) that marked Twelfth Night (2009), which was her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921, and all That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in Clair de Lune (2019) and Ohio State Murders (2023). McDonald's debut as a dramatic TV actor was with the Peabody Award-winning CBS series Having Our Say The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. The next time she appeared on television was as a recurring actor on NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit and she appeared with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald won her first Emmy for her part as a character in The HBO remake of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she returned to the screen, this time with Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., starring Josh Brolin. The Bedford Diaries, a WB television show that premiered in 2006. Then she had the privilege of playing a regular role in NBC's Kidnapped during the following year. McDonald received a nomination for a fourth Emmy in the year 2016 for her performance in HBO's production of Lady Day, at Emerson's Bar & Grill. The Bite was a six episodes pandemic-themed drama created through Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. In 2009, she portrayed U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In 2018, McDonald returned to her role as Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She got three Critics Choice Award nods for this performance. She is currently appearing as a guest on Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which premieres on HBO.
